Transcripts of Robert McAfee journals, 1796-1807.

This collection consists of transcripts of two journals kept by Robert B. McAfee of Mercer County, Kentucky, from 1796-1807. McAfee wrote in the journal as a young man while in school learning Latin and the classics. He later studied law in Frankfort with "Mr. Breckinridge" and lists the literature he studied. Many Latin words and phrases are used throughout the journal. He also mentions news of family and friends, court business, various sermons he has heard, and some legislative business. The transcriber and date of transcription is unknown.

McAfee was born on Salt River in Mercer County, Kentucky. McAfee's father, also named Robert, was an early settler in that area. The younger McAfee studied at Transylvania Seminary in the 1790s and read law under John Breckinridge. He began his legal practice in his native county and represented the area in the state legislature. McAfee entered the army in the War of 1812 and rose to the rank of captain.
